Trash Is Now A Greater Treasure

…This is the beautiful kind of tender, juicy, flavorful burger that requires you to eat it over your plate as the burger’s clear juices run over your fingers and down your chin. It will force me to reconfigure my top NYC burger list, but not while I was enjoying it. Even the bright but not too sweet or sour pickles were a pleasure…. [Full post]

In Short Order

…Yes, warm, thick slices of bread singing with bouquets of vanilla and nutmeg were a great base for the assortment of berries and melon and cantaloupe. The bacon had perfect “chew” and great flavor without being overly salty. The mellow maple rewarded me by topping mouthfuls of however many different elements I could fit on my fork at one time…. [Full post]

Si, Si!

…so I ordered a quarter of a tasty, juicy, nicely seasoned, and crackly-skinned chicken with a side of aromatic yellow rice and savory red beans. It comes with a bright and kicky herbal sauce, and for 12 bucks, including tip, I got a hot meal—more than I could finish—in quick time…. [Full post]

Happy Days

…A perfect medium burger, aromatic toasted rye, gooey swiss, and bright, hot, and flavorful jalapeños made for a pleasingly solid burger-eating experience. The meat was tasty and ran nicely clear with juices, without the toast’s crispiness being impaired. The smoky bacon complimented the pinkish beef’s natural, sweet, earthiness…. [Full post]

Tre Bene

…He first recommended the truffle egg toast appetizer off the pane-bruschetta menu section. The dish consists of two egg yolks baked on bread, and topped with fontina cheese and truffle oil. The offer the option of adding grated bottarga on top, and me being a new fan of it, decided it was worth the extra three bucks…. [Full post]

Sweet and Simple

…What did stand out—to me at least—was their options for savory toppings, including pretzels, tortilla chips, and, yes, wasabi pies! I decided to get a medium cup of the strawberry Fruizo (their other default flavors being banana and mango), and topped it with the wasabi peas, some pretzels, and some sliced almonds, which were a wonderful contrast flavor- and texture-wise to the robust sweetness of the strawberry in the icy, creamy-without-dairy, flavor Fruizo…. [Full post]

Short and Sweet

…It was a very tasty and juicy cut of meat, nicely seasoned, slicing tenderly, and perfectly grizzled on its edges. A house-made chimichurri sauce brightened each feral and earthy bite with fresh herbal notes and peppery highlights…. [Full post]

One For The Ages

…After the first bite, I could imagine Barbra Streisand, now, singing Memories in my head, as I, literally and nostalgically, enjoyed the burgers crumbly, tasty, tender meat and its juicy excesses….. [Full post]

Hungary For Dessert

…The real sweetness would come, however, from the thicker-than-brulée shell topping of caramel (some off it seeping into the cake during baking), with its clean, deep sweetness and it’s “crackling” texture. Some leftover fresh raspberries from Monday’s breakfast that I tossed on top put the whole thing, well, over the top…. [Full post]

My New KFC

…The chicken’s best (of many) features is the extreme crispiness of its skin, so crispy that customers three tables away could hear my every bite. The slow-frying process gives the skin an almost “chicken cracklin” quality (think very thin crispy pork skin), and coupled with the chicken meat—moist from being encased in its candy-like shell—and the glazes—both rich, deep, intense and perfectly seasoned—became a festival of flavors and texture inside my mouth…. [Full Post]

Like A Good Neighbor

…The side salad of arugula, fresh basil, cherry tomatoes and shaved parmesan was a perfect compliment to the dish, as was the wonderful glass of white wine, an Argentinian torrontés of bright, subtle citrus, apricot, and peach, with herbal hints, a nice “weight” (it doesn’t “coat” the inside of your mouth), and finishing clean enough that you can still enjoy the flavors of whatever you’re eating…. [Full post]

Good Company

…This pie was indeed special. Richly layered with earthy and aromatic flavors, boosted by a rich but not heavy bechamel, and finely served on a firm, crispy, pliable, charcoal-y crust. Katie and I did enjoy this pizza very much, neither one of us understanding, however, why someone would want to add jalapeños to it…. [Full post]

Fruitful Options

…We cleaned our plates—no small feat since these were not small portions—and I eventually convinced Danny that he couldn’t really leave without having a dessert crepe, especially with the many options for fillings, from fruit to Nutella to nuts to whipped cream to Oreos to brownies to ice cream to granola and Graham crackers. We, again, customized our own dessert crepe stuffed with fresh bananas and strawberries, and cornflakes, and topped it with drizzles of dark and white chocolate…. [Full post]

Unexpected Gem

…The portion was more dinner sized, and, again, my skepticism was foiled by an ample amount of chicken meat, and scant traces of MSG or cornstarch. The dish, while delivering on its promise of spice, was refreshingly light, with the impressive rice noodles, rightfully gummier and spongier than regular noodles, making any residual cooking juices get absorbed into them while the flavored oils clung to them. Even being supportively optimistic, this lunch me surpassed my expectations at every turn…. [Full post]

Jurassic Pork

…Yes, the ribs were tender and juicy and came off the bone effortlessly. The properly smoke-ringed brisket melted in my mouth. The pulled pork was especially good, since it had shreds of lean, and fatty pork, as well as some crispy bits of skin, which I usually find sorely missing from most pulled pork around the city…. [Full post]

Fairer Jacques

… I loved the texture of the finely chopped proteins in this terrine, mildly spiced to compliment the pork and moderate any gaminess in the rabbit, and wrapped in bacon for extra flavor. The mustards provided any amount of kick I needed, the cranberry being extra pleasant, adding a nice layer of flavor, as fruits do, to the game meat… [Full post]

“Shake” Wait

…The flattop-grilled, “squished”, Pat Lafreida beef is still stellar—caramelizing to a slight crisp on the outside while flavorful juices ran clear from the moist interior—and topped off with an “crisp”-fried, earthy, plump portobello mushroom oozing with hot, sharp and mellow muenster and cheddar cheeses, which winds up being more of a treat than a necessity, but is charming nonetheless… [Full post]

Frequent Fryer, Pt. 2

…At only $12, they are, like their clam counterpart, a great appetizer to split between two people before chowing down on lobster or shrimp rolls, or for one person to completely fill up of some plump, tender shrimp, fried in a simply seasoned crackermeal, and served with a bright, piquant cocktail sauce, deep with earthy hot horseradish….
