“Chip” On The Ol’ Block
…And it was quite good! Lots of flavor, great textures, juicy pork, toothsome black beans, crisp lettuce; it all worked together surprisingly well—and not just for fast food—and was plentiful enough to excuse the $8 price tag (over $10 with the addition of guacamole)…. [Full Post]

Danny’s Burger Evolution
…Danny became a fan of the burger after two quick bites—and absolutely loved the crinkle-cut fries, which I agree don’t get the recognition they deserve—and is now more eager to be able to enjoy more of them from the Shake Shack on East 86th, just two and a half blocks from his apartment…. My New KFC
…The chicken’s best (of many) features is the extreme crispiness of its skin, so crispy that customers three tables away could hear my every bite. The slow-frying process gives the skin an almost “chicken cracklin” quality (think very thin crispy pork skin), and coupled with the chicken meat—moist from being encased in its candy-like shell—and the glazes—both rich, deep, intense and perfectly seasoned—became a festival of flavors and texture inside my mouth…. “Shake” Wait
…The flattop-grilled, “squished”, Pat Lafreida beef is still stellar—caramelizing to a slight crisp on the outside while flavorful juices ran clear from the moist interior—and topped off with an “crisp”-fried, earthy, plump portobello mushroom oozing with hot, sharp and mellow muenster and cheddar cheeses, which winds up being more of a treat than a necessity, but is charming nonetheless… [Full Post]

Energy Kitchen
…There was a lot more to enjoy than previous incarnations of “healthy burgers” I’ve had in the past, the ostrich meat while quite lean, possessing a decent meat flavor without any gaminess. Crisp carrots and lettuce added nice texture and moisture, rounded out by aromatic hints from the whole wheat bun and a little “zing” of flavor from the packet ketchup I put on top…. [Full post]

Good Morning Boost
Energy Kitchen | Various Locations | www.energykitchen.com I LOVE SURPRISES. Being a cynic-slash-skeptic makes them, however, very rare occurrences in my life. And when a recent iteration of something called Energy Kitchen opened up directly across the street from me, I, initially, reacted not with surprise, but with pity. The same pity I had for [...]
Grom Is Da’ Bomb!
…Creamy it was, perfect cold temperature, and rich and layered with a host of complimentary flavors. A nice, clean yet robust vanilla flavor evened the smoothness of the “egg cream”-based gelato. Shards of pure chocolate were small enough to melt on the tongue on contact, while the cornmeal helped keep the biscuits crispy and crunchy until the very last spoonful…. [Full post]

Fast and Steady Eddie
…The crust, from dough they make in-house themselves—was properly thin and firm, if not fully crispy, though it holds a great fold. I personally might have preferred a bit more flavor to the crust, but any lack of it was more than made up for in the rich, tangy, aromatic, well-seasoned and nicely balanced sauce. The cheese, as well, had a nice, mellow taste, and was pliable to the teeth without sliding off the slice. A quick survey of the folks who enjoyed my pizza charity found that they all were very impressed and pleased with the pizza, one even claiming “Awesome!”…. [Full post]

Five Four Sixty Six, Two
…The pommes frites were less a second banana and more of a co-star, bringing back waves of nostalgia—for me at least—piercing crispy-on-the-outside shoestrings of airy potato that might be the only thing that ketchup was really made for…. [Full post]

Puttin’ On The Schnitzel
…The textures were all close to spot on; the schnitzel was thin and crisp on the outside, with the veal on the inside being tender enough to easily cut and bite through. The shreds of cabbage were cool and crisp, and the nuggets of potato in salad were comfortably malleable between my tongue and the roof of my mouth…. [Full post]
